I’m a Houston therapist providing therapy for teens and adults who feel stuck, overwhelmed, or disconnected from themselves. Many of my clients are navigating major life transitions—starting college, entering adulthood, coping with academic or social pressure, working through difficult relationships, or healing from a challenging life experience. Often, they feel anxious, trapped in their thoughts, and unsure how to change old patterns. They recognize unhelpful thought cycles but don’t always know how to shift them. Sometimes that stress shows up in behaviors, reactions, or decisions through negative coping skills or patterns they want to break.
My approach to therapy is structured, practical, and focused on helping clients make meaningful changes in the way they think—so they can also change how they feel, act, and move forward. I use evidence-based methods to help you gain clarity, take action, and create lasting growth.
I specialize in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), which focuses on the connection between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Together, we identify unhelpful thought patterns, challenge them, and replace them with healthier perspectives and coping strategies. My sessions are hands-on, incorporating worksheets, exercises, and guided reflections so you leave with tools you can use in daily life. I also integrate Motivational Interviewing, Narrative Therapy, and Somatic CBT to address both the mental and physical effects of stress, anxiety, and emotional pain.
My current private practice work is shaped by years of diverse experience. I’ve counseled children and families, supported older adults in public housing, and provided trauma-informed care to survivors of human trafficking. As a clinical case manager at SEARCH Homeless Services in Houston, I worked with clients facing homelessness, mental health challenges, and substance use concerns—developing skills in crisis intervention, de-escalation, and integrated care. Across these roles, I learned the value of meeting people where they are, collaborating with other professionals, and offering practical tools that lead to real change. These experiences now allow me to provide therapy that is both compassionate and results-driven.
I love watching clients have that “ah-ha” moment when they realize they can challenge old narratives and step into a more confident, grounded version of themselves. Whether we’re working on managing anxiety, building emotional resilience, repairing relationships, or letting go of self-defeating stories, I create a safe and collaborative space where meaningful change feels possible.
Starting therapy can feel intimidating, but I’m here to make the process less overwhelming. In our first sessions, I focus on building trust, learning about your goals and values, and identifying what’s standing in your way. From there, we’ll develop skills and strategies to help you navigate life with clarity, confidence, and a stronger connection to who you truly are.

Supervised Therapist Clinical Mental Health Counseling Graduate StudentIn-Person and Virtual Works With: Children (10+), Adolescents, and Adults
I am a pre-licensed counselor supervised by Dr. Abby Candelari, Licensed Psychologist, who works with children (10+), adolescents, and adults struggling with anxiety, academic stress, life transitions, and the social and emotional challenges of growing up. As both an educator and a parent, I understand firsthand the pressures young people face today and the challenges families encounter as they try to support them. Before entering the counseling field, I spent more than two decades working in independent schools and currently serve as Head of Middle School at River Oaks Baptist School. Throughout my career in education, I have worked closely with students and families navigating academic pressures, social challenges, and the emotional ups and downs that often accompany childhood and adolescence. Over time, I came to see how deeply mental health influences students’ learning, relationships, and overall well-being. That realization led me to pursue graduate training in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Lamar University, where I am currently completing my practicum and internship.
My background as an educator, school leader, parent, and pre-licensed counselor gives me a unique perspective in therapy. Because I have spent much of my career working within schools, I understand the academic and social pressures students face today—including test anxiety, social anxiety, and performance pressures—and the challenges families encounter as they try to support them. Under the supervision of Dr. Candelari, I integrate educational best practices with evidence-based psychological interventions to help clients feel better and live better. I hold a Doctorate in K–12 Professional Leadership from the University of Houston, where my research focused on evaluating and improving middle school academic programs. My work has always centered on helping young people thrive both academically and emotionally, and I’ve spent many years collaborating with teachers, administrators, and student support teams.
In therapy, I take an integrative, developmentally informed approach, drawing on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), person-centered therapy, and Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT). These approaches work together to help clients develop practical coping strategies while building on their existing strengths. I believe that meaningful change begins with a strong therapeutic relationship built on trust, empathy, and collaboration. My goal is to help clients better understand themselves, develop practical tools to manage challenges, and move forward with greater clarity and confidence.
When working with children and adolescents, I also collaborate closely with parents and families, understanding how school stressors can affect family dynamics. I am comfortable coordinating with teachers, school counselors, and learning specialists when appropriate so that students receive consistent support across home, school, and therapy settings. My goal is to help young people feel more confident navigating both the academic and emotional demands of school while supporting parents in understanding how best to help their child succeed.

More About Connor
Connor Cook brings more than two decades of experience working in independent schools, where he has supported students, families, and educators through both academic and social-emotional challenges. Much of his career has focused on middle school education, a developmental stage where students are navigating rapid cognitive, emotional, and social growth.
In his current role as Head of Middle School at River Oaks Baptist School, Connor oversees academic programming, faculty development, and student support initiatives for a large middle school community. Prior to this role, he served as Head of Middle School and Assistant Head of Middle School at St. Francis Episcopal School and taught English at Episcopal High School in Houston. These roles provided him with extensive experience supporting students and families through academic stress, peer relationships, identity development, and major developmental transitions.
Throughout his career in education, Connor developed a strong interest in the intersection between mental health, learning, and development. This interest led him to pursue graduate training in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Lamar University to work more directly with individuals and families in a therapeutic setting.
Connor holds a Doctorate in K–12 Professional Leadership from the University of Houston, where his dissertation evaluated middle school academic programming and explored ways to improve student learning outcomes. He has also completed extensive professional development in Mind, Brain, and Education research, including training partnerships with St. Andrew’s Episcopal School and Neuroteach Global. These experiences have shaped his understanding of how emotional well-being, brain development, and learning interact.
In addition to his leadership roles, Connor has served on numerous school committees focused on student well-being and academic development, including student support teams, academic planning initiatives, accreditation review teams, and strategic planning committees.
Connor is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Counseling Association and the Texas Counseling Association. His work reflects a longstanding commitment to helping young people develop resilience, confidence, and a strong sense of self as they navigate the challenges of growing up.

Dr. Nathan Barclay

Nathan Barclay Ph.D.
Licensed Clinical Psychologist
I provide therapy for people who have suffered loss, trauma, or other hardships that make living life difficult. By working together to explore your internal experiences, we will develop greater clarity about what matters most to you, what gets in the way of connecting with it, and what you can do to change that. Using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) from a person-centered perspective, my goals are to help you embrace your thoughts and feelings, unburden yourself from the past and the future, and begin the process of reinvesting in your life. My specialties include:
Grief
Grief is a painful, natural, and necessary part of life. However, there are countless factors that can derail this process, which leads us to get stuck in our grief, struggle within ourselves, and miss out on finding life beyond the death. My approach focuses on overcoming those distractions and reacquainting you with the grieving process—making room to gradually and fully experience the loss—allowing you to move into a life that connects you with what matters to you while honoring the connection with the deceased. Grief is not something to “get over,” but rather something to journey through. The path of grief is different for everyone, and the cultural, social, and personal factors that shape how we grieve can make the process even more complicated. Many people find themselves stuck in grief because they feel pressured to “move on” before they are ready, because the pain feels too heavy to share, or even because the pain feels too heavy to bear alone. We will navigate this often difficult terrain by embracing the full range of your emotions without rushing the process, finding a way to honor the journey as deeply as we honor the deceased.
Trauma
Trauma treatment can be complicated, and it often requires a flexible, personalized approach to getting you back in touch with your life. I navigate this using Trauma-Focused Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (TFACT), which prioritizes how we establish a new relationship with the trauma in the present moment. We do not resign ourselves to the trauma, but instead, we find a way to regain control over how you respond to these past wounds. I also draw from other evidence-based modalities when appropriate, ensuring that your care is tailored to fit your unique goals, centered around the primary idea of reclaiming your sense of agency and direction. Together, we will work on fostering resilience, self-compassion, and the ability to move forward with a sense of purpose and connection.
Men’s Issues
Men experience a host of issues that are often overlooked and misunderstood, and as a result, they often do not receive the help or support they need when they would need it most. Men across a wide range of backgrounds find themselves carrying this suffering in silence, unsure of how to navigate their feelings or find others who can relate. I am passionate about ensuring that men can have the space to connect fully with what really matters to them, allowing you to define what it means to be your best self. By approaching our internal experiences curiously and confidently, we can come to terms with every aspect of our identity and reengage with our lives. This can give us the ability to create freedom from roles and expectations that may otherwise keep us stuck in old patterns and harmful cycles, with the purpose of finding new ways of thinking, being, and relating that support your most genuine self.
Anxiety and Depression
Life is stressful. This stress is usually manageable and maybe even helpful, but when it is neither, we can experience significant and impairing symptoms of anxiety and/or depression. These challenges can feel isolating, overwhelming, and all-consuming, making it hard to see beyond the internal fog. Whether you’re feeling hopeless, stuck, or caught in a loop of worry, I’m here to help you break free from these patterns. In our work together, we’ll explore how these emotions show up in your life, and what they’re protecting you from. Both depression and anxiety can be understood as natural responses to unprocessed pain, unmet needs, and unhelpful thought patterns. We will approach these challenges with a desire to understand, helping you accept the presence of difficult emotions without letting them control who you are and how you show up.
Interpersonal Issues & Identity Struggles
Many people find themselves struggling with deeply rooted patterns of behavior that make relationships difficult, whether with family, friends, or even within themselves. These struggles can often feel confusing and isolating, leaving you questioning who you really are, what actually matters to you, and why this seems like a never ending problem. Our work together will center on helping you better understand the deeper layers of these patterns. From a relational framework, we’ll use evidence-based approaches, such as Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), to help you build greater emotional resilience and self-compassion, allowing you to cultivate healthier relationships, both with others and with yourself. All of these specialty areas can (and usually do) overlap, and I look forward to embracing the complexity that makes your individual story so unique to you. We will work together to overcome the obstacles you face and promote meaningful change. If you’re ready to begin your journey, I offer a free 15-minute consultation to ensure we’re a good fit. I look forward to helping you achieve greater well-being.

More About Nathan:
Dr. Nathan Barclay is a licensed clinical psychologist with a passion for helping people thrive at every point in their lives. Over the course of his career, he has worked in a variety of settings, including the University of Mississippi Medical Center, Houston Methodist’s Behavioral Health Clinic, and Baylor College of Medicine, with a focus on mood and trauma-related disorders. His current specialties include grief, men’s issues, and personality concerns. He received his Bachelor of Science and completed his Ph.D. at Mississippi State University under the mentorship of experts in the treatment of depression, suicide, and sleep issues. Throughout his career, he has worked extensively with people from all walks of life who suffer deeply and profoundly, and he has developed a deep understanding of both the challenges that they face and the love that they deserve.
Dr. Barclay worked extensively with Mississippi State University’s Student Counseling Services, where he operated for several years providing both therapy and assessment services for depression, anxiety, OCD, personality disorders, ADHD, and trauma-related disorders. He regularly served as a first-line clinician for crisis intervention, led group workshops for students, and helped develop assessment and treatment protocols for a variety of student related concerns.
He found his passion for grief work during his postdoctoral fellowship at Houston Methodist. He provided services for healthcare providers who suffered very unique stories of grief, in both their personal and professional lives. The unspoken impact of these deaths highlighted the importance of providing quality grief therapy, particularly in contexts where grieving adequately is deprioritized or even impossible.
Dr. Barclay’s research experience began in exploring the nature of suicide trends in college students and eventually developed into understanding how men relate to others, social and psychological factors that may be involved, and how self-compassion interventions could change these relationships. He continues to collaborate with other researchers on projects across a variety of subject areas, which continues to refine his approach to treatment and ultimately help his clients thrive.

I provide therapy for adults with PTSD, anxiety, and depression. I have over 15 years of experience treating trauma, including working with survivors of combat, accidents, crime, sexual assault, and childhood abuse.
Experiencing a trauma can upend your life—it can change how you think about yourself, other people, and the world. I work with clients to identify how trauma has impacted them and help them identify ways to heal. Although we can’t go back in time and stop the trauma from happening to you, we can, together, find healthier ways to move forward.
My goal is to provide a supportive, safe place to work on trauma at your own pace. I also treat anxiety, including social anxiety, generalized anxiety, panic disorder, and OCD, as well as depression and related issues such as trouble sleeping. I use evidence-based therapy approaches, such as cognitive-behavioral therapies. For me, the purpose of therapy is to give you tools to use in your everyday life, so that you can cope with life’s challenges as they arise.
It’s very important to me that clients feel supported and are partners in making decisions about their treatment. This includes choosing which evidence-based treatment approach makes sense for you, helping tailor treatment to your goals and values, and determining when you are ready to graduate from treatment. I want to make sure you are getting what you want from therapy. When you start therapy, we will meet weekly. As you progress, we will gradually extend the intervals between sessions.

You didn’t expect it to be this hard.
If you’re struggling with infertility, pregnancy loss, or the transition to motherhood, you may feel overwhelmed, isolated, or like your life has taken a path you never anticipated. Even when others mean well, it can feel like no one fully understands what you’re going through.
I specialize in supporting women navigating infertility, postpartum and maternal mental health concerns, as well as anxiety, depression, and grief. My goal is to create a space where you feel both understood and supported — and where you can begin to make sense of what you’re experiencing while building tools to move forward.
I take an evidence-based, practical approach to therapy, drawing from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), mindfulness, and motivational interviewing. I focus on helping you develop concrete coping strategies you can use in your daily life while also building a strong, supportive therapeutic relationship.
In my experience, meaningful change happens when these two elements come together:
-Learning effective skills to manage anxiety and improve mood
-Feeling truly seen, understood, and supported
I want therapy to feel both productive and personal — a place where you can do real work while also feeling safe enough to be honest about what you’re going through.
Infertility and pregnancy loss often involve a unique kind of grief — the loss of what you thought your life would look like. Many women go through this process quietly, unsure of how to share what they are experiencing or feeling, like others don’t fully understand. In our work together, we create space for that experience while also helping you:
-Develop coping strategies for anxiety and uncertainty
-Navigate medical treatments and decision-making
-Strengthen relationships during a stressful time
-Reconnect with a sense of control and self
