Nathan Barclay Ph.D.

Licensed Clinical Psychologist

I provide therapy for people who have suffered loss, trauma, or other hardships that make living life difficult. By working together to explore your internal experiences, we will develop greater clarity about what matters most to you, what gets in the way of connecting with it, and what you can do to change that. Using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) from a person-centered perspective, my goals are to help you embrace your thoughts and feelings, unburden yourself from the past and the future, and begin the process of reinvesting in your life. My specialties include:

Grief

Grief is a painful, natural, and necessary part of life. However, there are countless factors that can derail this process, which leads us to get stuck in our grief, struggle within ourselves, and miss out on finding life beyond the death. My approach focuses on overcoming those distractions and reacquainting you with the grieving process—making room to gradually and fully experience the loss—allowing you to move into a life that connects you with what matters to you while honoring the connection with the deceased. Grief is not something to “get over,” but rather something to journey through. The path of grief is different for everyone, and the cultural, social, and personal factors that shape how we grieve can make the process even more complicated. Many people find themselves stuck in grief because they feel pressured to “move on” before they are ready, because the pain feels too heavy to share, or even because the pain feels too heavy to bear alone. We will navigate this often difficult terrain by embracing the full range of your emotions without rushing the process, finding a way to honor the journey as deeply as we honor the deceased.

Trauma

Trauma treatment can be complicated, and it often requires a flexible, personalized approach to getting you back in touch with your life. I navigate this using Trauma-Focused Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (TFACT), which prioritizes how we establish a new relationship with the trauma in the present moment. We do not resign ourselves to the trauma, but instead, we find a way to regain control over how you respond to these past wounds. I also draw from other evidence-based modalities when appropriate, ensuring that your care is tailored to fit your unique goals, centered around the primary idea of reclaiming your sense of agency and direction. Together, we will work on fostering resilience, self-compassion, and the ability to move forward with a sense of purpose and connection.

Men’s Issues

Men experience a host of issues that are often overlooked and misunderstood, and as a result, they often do not receive the help or support they need when they would need it most. Men across a wide range of backgrounds find themselves carrying this suffering in silence, unsure of how to navigate their feelings or find others who can relate. I am passionate about ensuring that men can have the space to connect fully with what really matters to them, allowing you to define what it means to be your best self. By approaching our internal experiences curiously and confidently, we can come to terms with every aspect of our identity and reengage with our lives. This can give us the ability to create freedom from roles and expectations that may otherwise keep us stuck in old patterns and harmful cycles, with the purpose of finding new ways of thinking, being, and relating that support your most genuine self.

Anxiety and Depression

Life is stressful. This stress is usually manageable and maybe even helpful, but when it is neither, we can experience significant and impairing symptoms of anxiety and/or depression. These challenges can feel isolating, overwhelming, and all-consuming, making it hard to see beyond the internal fog. Whether you’re feeling hopeless, stuck, or caught in a loop of worry, I’m here to help you break free from these patterns. In our work together, we’ll explore how these emotions show up in your life, and what they’re protecting you from. Both depression and anxiety can be understood as natural responses to unprocessed pain, unmet needs, and unhelpful thought patterns. We will approach these challenges with a desire to understand, helping you accept the presence of difficult emotions without letting them control who you are and how you show up.

Interpersonal Issues & Identity Struggles

Many people find themselves struggling with deeply rooted patterns of behavior that make relationships difficult, whether with family, friends, or even within themselves. These struggles can often feel confusing and isolating, leaving you questioning who you really are, what actually matters to you, and why this seems like a never ending problem. Our work together will center on helping you better understand the deeper layers of these patterns. From a relational framework, we’ll use evidence-based approaches, such as Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), to help you build greater emotional resilience and self-compassion, allowing you to cultivate healthier relationships, both with others and with yourself. All of these specialty areas can (and usually do) overlap, and I look forward to embracing the complexity that makes your individual story so unique to you. We will work together to overcome the obstacles you face and promote meaningful change. If you’re ready to begin your journey, I offer a free 15-minute consultation to ensure we’re a good fit. I look forward to helping you achieve greater well-being.

More About Nathan:

Dr. Nathan Barclay is a licensed clinical psychologist with a passion for helping people thrive at every point in their lives. Over the course of his career, he has worked in a variety of settings, including the University of Mississippi Medical Center, Houston Methodist’s Behavioral Health Clinic, and Baylor College of Medicine, with a focus on mood and trauma-related disorders. His current specialties include grief, men’s issues, and personality concerns. He received his Bachelor of Science and completed his Ph.D. at Mississippi State University under the mentorship of experts in the treatment of depression, suicide, and sleep issues. Throughout his career, he has worked extensively with people from all walks of life who suffer deeply and profoundly, and he has developed a deep understanding of both the challenges that they face and the love that they deserve.

Dr. Barclay worked extensively with Mississippi State University’s Student Counseling Services, where he operated for several years providing both therapy and assessment services for depression, anxiety, OCD, personality disorders, ADHD, and trauma-related disorders. He regularly served as a first-line clinician for crisis intervention, led group workshops for students, and helped develop assessment and treatment protocols for a variety of student related concerns.

He found his passion for grief work during his postdoctoral fellowship at Houston Methodist. He provided services for healthcare providers who suffered very unique stories of grief, in both their personal and professional lives. The unspoken impact of these deaths highlighted the importance of providing quality grief therapy, particularly in contexts where grieving adequately is deprioritized or even impossible.

Dr. Barclay’s research experience began in exploring the nature of suicide trends in college students and eventually developed into understanding how men relate to others, social and psychological factors that may be involved, and how self-compassion interventions could change these relationships. He continues to collaborate with other researchers on projects across a variety of subject areas, which continues to refine his approach to treatment and ultimately help his clients thrive.

Dr. Danielle Carr is a distinguished licensed psychologist with over two decades of experience in the field. Her unwavering commitment to helping individuals of all ages overcome life’s challenges and achieve fulfillment has been the cornerstone of her outstanding career.

Dr. Carr’s journey in psychology began with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, which she earned with Magna Cum Laude honors from Texas A&M University. She then embarked on an academic path that culminated in a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Georgia.

Her graduate school experience encompassed a number of clinical settings where she treated children, adolescents, and their families. She had the opportunity to train under the premier experts in the field of behavioral treatments for children. Under their supervision, Dr. Carr treated children and adolescents struggling with anxiety, depression, ADHD, and Oppositional Defiant Disorder, among others. Through these experiences, she has helped parents to feel more confident in their abilities to help their children reach their full potential. As a parent herself, she feels passionately about providing kids and parents with the skills that they need to thrive.

During her doctoral internship year at Brown University, she discovered her interest in the intersection of psychology and health. Her first experience in this realm was within a sleep clinic where she was trained in CBT-i, the gold-standard treatment for insomnia. She helped both adults and children learn how to get a good night’s rest, providing much-needed relief for so many. Dr. Carr went on to pursue a post-doctoral fellowship at the Emory University School of Medicine, where she worked with children and families facing pediatric cancer and sickle cell disease, as well as with adolescents in a primary care medical clinic. Dr. Carr’s care and compassion have driven her to care for both adults and children through some of the most delicate and stressful periods of their lives.

Dr. Carr worked M.D. Anderson Cancer Center for over 17 years, where she made significant contributions to cancer care. Dr. Carr helped cancer patients to develop the skills they needed to face a frightening and potentially life-threatening situation. Her patience and understanding continue to allow her clients to have a safe space to discuss their fears openly. Though she has transitioned to private practice, Dr. Carr has retained a relationship with M.D. Anderson as a clinical supervisor for a grant-funded research study.

Dr. Carr’s passion for advancing knowledge in the field of psychology is evident in her substantial research contributions. She has been involved in multiple research projects, including studies on the psychosocial aspects of cancer, the impact of parental divorce on adolescents, and the role of optimism in psychological and physical functioning among patients diagnosed with HIV. Her dedication to research has resulted in numerous publications and presentations at esteemed conferences and allowed her to provide cutting-edge treatments to her clients.

About Me

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in Texas and a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in New York. For over a decade, I’ve worked with teens (15+), adults, and families as they navigate anxiety, depression, relationship stress, suicidality, and the overwhelming emotions that come with navigating complex life transitions.

In therapy, I strive to create a supportive, grounded space where clients can make sense of their inner experience and learn practical tools to move forward. My approach blends evidence-based treatments with warmth and collaboration. Whether you’re seeking structure, insight, or new ways to cope, my goal is to help you feel seen and supported as you make meaningful change.

My Philosophy

In therapy, I offer a grounded, collaborative space where clients can safely explore what’s working, what’s not, and what they’d like to change. My approach integrates evidence-based practices—including Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), psychodynamic theory, and Gestalt therapy—with a focus on increasing insight, improving coping strategies, learning practical skills, and building tolerance and acceptance for life’s pain and uncertainty.

I believe each person is the expert of their own life. In my therapy room, I am here to learn all about you, to see you. Together, we figure out how I can be most supportive and helpful to you in your journey. Your goals are my goals.

Whether you’re navigating persistent anxiety or depression, struggling to find peace and contentment, or feeling overwhelmed by your emotions, I offer a space where you don’t have to go it alone. My work is especially grounded in personal connection and skill building, and I hold a deep belief that healing—even in the most painful moments—is possible.

Clinical Experience

For over a decade, I have been working as a therapist in various treatment settings, including agencies, hospitals, and private practice as a clinician, supervisor, and consultant. I currently serve as the Chair of Risk and Suicide Prevention at Ohel Children’s Home and Family Services in New York. I lead a team of experienced clinicians who support high-risk clients and provide consultation to their treating therapists. In this role, I’ve helped develop suicide prevention protocols, trained more than 100 clinicians in risk management, and facilitated weekly meetings focused on reviewing complex cases and enhancing client safety.

My clinical foundation was shaped by two years answering crisis hotline calls, including overnight shifts with individuals in acute emotional distress. This work strengthened my ability to remain calm and focused in high-risk situations and deepened my understanding of how to support people in moments of crisis. In my current clinical work, I continue to provide clinical supervision and consultation to therapists working with clients at elevated risk.

• Trauma & PTSD • Anxiety Disorders • Depression • OCD • Difficulty sleeping

I provide therapy for adults with PTSD, anxiety, and depression. I have over 15 years of experience treating trauma, including working with survivors of combat, accidents, crime, sexual assault, and childhood abuse.

Experiencing a trauma can upend your life—it can change how you think about yourself, other people, and the world. I work with clients to identify how trauma has impacted them and help them identify ways to heal. Although we can’t go back in time and stop the trauma from happening to you, we can, together, find healthier ways to move forward.

My goal is to provide a supportive, safe place to work on trauma at your own pace. I also treat anxiety, including social anxiety, generalized anxiety, panic disorder, and OCD, as well as depression and related issues such as trouble sleeping. I use evidence-based therapy approaches, such as cognitive-behavioral therapies. For me, the purpose of therapy is to give you tools to use in your everyday life, so that you can cope with life’s challenges as they arise.

It’s very important to me that clients feel supported and are partners in making decisions about their treatment. This includes choosing which evidence-based treatment approach makes sense for you, helping tailor treatment to your goals and values, and determining when you are ready to graduate from treatment. I want to make sure you are getting what you want from therapy. When you start therapy, we will meet weekly. As you progress, we will gradually extend the intervals between sessions.

Helping You Find Relief from Anxiety, OCD, and Trauma

I help clients find clarity and relief when anxiety, obsessive thoughts, or past trauma start interfering with daily life. If you’ve been feeling stuck in fear, shame, or self-doubt, or struggling with intrusive thoughts, panic, or chronic worry, you’re not alone. These issues are common, and they’re treatable with the right support.

I specialize in the treatment of anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), trauma-related conditions, and insomnia. With over 15 years of experience in outpatient, residential, and research settings, my approach is compassionate and collaborative. Together, we will create a path forward for you so you can finally find the peace and calm you have been searching for.

I use evidence-based treatments, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), and mindfulness-based strategies, to help you build practical tools for long-term change.

I also recognize that trauma doesn’t always look like nightmares or flashbacks. Sometimes it shows up as burnout, irritability, relationship struggles, or a constant feeling of being on edge. My approach to trauma therapy goes beyond PTSD diagnoses because I believe all distress rooted in past experiences deserves to be taken seriously.

Whether you’re struggling with racing thoughts, avoidance, sleep difficulties, or the emotional weight of trauma, I’m here to provide a safe, supportive space to understand your symptoms and move forward with purpose.

What to Expect in Therapy I view therapy as a collaborative, empowering process. In our first session, we’ll discuss your goals, what’s working and what’s not, and develop a personalized plan to guide our work. We’ll typically start with weekly sessions to build a strong foundation. As you progress, we’ll gradually reduce the frequency of sessions, with the ultimate goal of helping you feel confident and equipped to maintain your gains independently.

Rylea Ranum, M.A.

Supervised Therapist Clinical Psychology Doctoral Student, University of Houston

I provide therapy for adults coping with anxiety, depression, insomnia, chronic pain, health-related challenges, and difficult life transitions. Many of the people I work with feel overwhelmed by recent changes, medical conditions, or past experiences that have altered their daily lives. My goal is to help clients regain a sense of control, move toward what matters most, and find greater peace and confidence.

I am a third-year doctoral student in the Clinical Psychology PhD program at the University of Houston, specializing in Clinical Neuropsychology. My training includes providing psychotherapy at the Coping Resource Center and the Southern Smoke Foundation, and conducting neuropsychological assessments at MD Anderson Cancer Center for medically complex cancer patients. Earlier in my career, I co-facilitated support groups for brain injury survivors and their families.

At the Coping Resource Center, I combine Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) to tailor treatment to each individual. I believe strongly in collaborative, evidence-based therapy that equips clients with practical tools for long-term resilience.

In addition to individual therapy, I run two of our specialty programs: CBT for Chronic Pain Program: Helping clients reduce the impact of chronic pain, improve daily functioning, and reconnect with valued activities.

CBT-I Program for Insomnia: Delivering gold-standard treatment for insomnia to restore healthy sleep and improve overall well-being.

My background in brain-behavior relationships, chronic pain, and sleep research allows me to bring a comprehensive and health-focused approach to therapy. I am committed to helping clients develop lasting skills that improve both mental and physical health. In our first session, we will get to know each other, explore what brought you to therapy, and identify your goals. Sessions typically begin weekly and may become more spaced out as you gain confidence using the skills and strategies we develop together, with the ultimate goal being that you feel equipped to handle life’s challenges independently.

If you’re ready to get started, I always offer a 15-min consult to see if we are a good fit. I’d love to help you or a member of your family get the help they need to live better.

Emily Daly, MSc

Supervised Therapist

I help children, teens, families, and adults navigate learning and neurodivergent differences (dyslexia, ADHD, autism) alongside anxiety, depression, OCD, and sleep/insomnia. My approach is collaborative and skills-focused—practical strategies you can use at home, school, and work.

My foundation is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). I tailor care with:

ERP (Exposure and Response Prevention) for OCD (exposure hierarchies, response prevention, reducing family accommodation)

CBT-I for insomnia and sleep difficulties

PMT (Parent Management Training) for behavior support and routines

ACT (Acceptance & Commitment Therapy) and MI (Motivational Interviewing) to strengthen values-based habits and follow-through

OCD Program

I will run Coping Resource Center’s OCD Program, delivering structured ERP for children, teens, and adults. If OCD is your primary concern, ask about enrolling in our program.

My academic work focuses on: Sleep & mental health: insomnia and daytime functioning; integrating CBT-I within youth and adult care

Neurodevelopment & learning: ADHD, autism, and learning disorders (including dyslexia), executive functioning, and school supports
